A Song, The World to Come

Miranda Lello’s debut collection is a deeply felt and often playful reflection on the liminal moments of contemporary life.  Lello’s keen eye searches out the possibilities of new worlds as they exist in the everyday moments of work, of journeys, of love, and of living. This is a collection written on the body and mind and invested in the capacity of poetry to make us feel.

All the men I have ever loved ride bicycles.

But in the end, a bicycle humming between your legs
Guarantees more happiness than a man.

From the Afterword:

I try to write a poem that bursts with living, like Walt Whitman, or springs with strange rhythms, like Gerard Manley Hopkins, or dissects everyday life with disparate symbols, like Sylvia Plath… It might be a moment in time, a scene, an idea. But the shape of the words is never quite right. In the translation between knowledge and feeling and back something of both it lost. I think the words should express that too. I want my poems to lack, fail, make space for what is missing.
